Introduction to Gaming Platforms<\/span><\/b><\/h1>\n

Today, I'm introducing Heroic Games Launcher, a tool I use frequently. It supports Epic, GOG, and Amazon platforms, and you can also manually add games. Specifically, support for the Epic platform is based on Legendary, which covers most features of the original Epic Games Launcher, including cloud save support and EOS Overlay support. Additionally, you can download Wine-GE and Proton-GE compatibility layers and assign different layers and launch options to each game individually.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, let\u2019s focus on the experience of playing Epic platform games on deepin (Epic gives away one free game per week, nice!).<\/span><\/p>\n

For those who regularly play games, the Epic Games Store should be a familiar platform. As the owner of the well-known Unreal Engine, Epic Games Store is not only an important support for game development but also a highly regarded game distribution platform, second only to Steam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Third-Party Client Introduction & Installation<\/span><\/b><\/h1>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

Search for Heroic Games Launcher in the deepin 23 app store to install it. As a powerful independent third-party game launcher, you can manage your game library, download, install, and launch games after logging into your account.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the previous article, <\/span>How to Run Most Windows Games on deepin 23<\/span><\/i><\/a>, we discussed that the Steam platform includes Proton, a Wine branch maintained by Valve, which is famous in the Linux gaming world. Even though Valve has open-sourced the Proton project, other non-Steam clients still cannot download the official version of Proton for use. Steam itself also doesn\u2019t support adding or using any external Wine or Proton versions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike Steam's approach, Heroic Games Launcher has a built-in Wine manager, where users can freely install various community-built versions of Proton-GE and Wine-GE, giving more flexibility in choosing versions.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you launch the Heroic Games Launcher for the first time, the default language may not automatically switch based on the system language. You\u2019ll need to manually set the launcher language:<\/span><\/section>\n

On the home page of the launcher, you\u2019ll see the repository and store modules. The store module is almost identical to the native Epic Games Store, used for purchasing games, so we won\u2019t go into detail here.<\/span><\/section>\n

To save time, I suggest downloading the required Wine versions from the Wine manager according to your needs before configuring and installing games in the repository.<\/span><\/section>\n

\u203b\u00a0 Unlike Steam, Epic Games Store does not currently offer any native Linux games. To run Windows games, you need to use the Wine compatibility layer. When you click to download a game, a configuration menu will pop up, allowing you to configure the Wine container, including the container path and Wine version selection. Of course, if you ask whether there is a global configuration to set the Wine container for all games to avoid configuring it separately for each game, the answer is yes. Go back to the launcher\u2019s home page, navigate to the settings menu:<\/span>Settings ==> Game Defaults.<\/span>Here, you can set the default Wine version for global use and enable\/disable specific technical features for games.<\/span><\/section>\n

Adding External Windows Games<\/span><\/b><\/h1>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n
For a powerful Linux third-party game launcher, only supporting the games in the library is not enough. After all, Steam allows adding local exe game files that are not in Steam and running them through Steam Proton. Unsurprisingly, Heroic Games Launcher also supports adding your local exe games, and you can configure the Wine container and launch them through the launcher. However, Heroic Games Launcher seems to be more beginner-friendly. After clicking to add a game, a window will appear to help you configure the game. Just enter the following details:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Game\/Application Title:<\/span><\/b> Name of the game;<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. App Image:<\/span><\/b> Full path of the game icon file;<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Platform Version:<\/span><\/b> Select the platform based on the actual situation, in this case, Windows;<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. WinPrefix:<\/span><\/b> Directory of the Wine container for the game. For stability, it\u2019s recommended to use a separate container for each game;<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Wine Version:<\/span><\/b> Choose the appropriate Wine version based on your needs;<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Select Executable File:<\/span><\/b> The game\u2019s exe file.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/section>\n
